Thomas Zander, born in 1962, opened Galerie Thomas Zander in Cologne in 1996. The gallery presents expanded photography as well as media art and conceptual art. Its photography section features international artists from the early 20th century to the present who consider the medium of photography within the larger concerns of contemporary art. The focus is on conceptual photography and movements that developed out of the tradition of documentary style photography such as New Documents and New Topographics. The gallery regularly participates in art fairs such as Art Basel, FIAC, Paris Photo, Art Cologne, and Photo London. In addition to mounting the gallery exhibitions, Zander advises collections, curates exhibitions in collaboration with international institutions, and regularly publishes monographs and catalogues. For several years, Thomas Zander was a member of the selection committee of Paris Photo and he is currently the sector expert on classical photography at Art Basel.
