Partying people alongside heavily armed police, concrete blocks and water cannons – an apparently irreconcilable contrast that lent a more serious face to the exuberant buoyancy of Cologne’s carnival in 2017. Almost no Session of recent years was overshadowed by bigger security considerations than this one was. Did Cologne residents let this spoil their mood? No way! The exhibition documents how Cologne carnival-goers, swaying between security and threat, experienced the carnival a new way under the portents of a changed world view.
